Tips for Bra Shopping After Breast Augmentation

Woman shopping for a bra after breast augmentation

One perk my New Haven breast augmentation patients look forward to the most after surgery is going out to shop for bras that might not have been available to them before. It’s an exciting part of the process, but there’s more to it than simply sizing up.

In this blog post, I’m sharing a few tips that will help make your post-augmentation bra shopping experience as successful and rewarding as possible.

Be Patient

It’s tempting to run out and find new pieces right away, but you’ll actually be in a compression bra for the first couple of weeks. There’s a good reason for this: soft, tight-fitting bras prevent swelling and help your breasts heal evenly for the best possible result. It’s also important to skip the underwire during this time as it can irritate your incisions. Stock up on a couple of options and wait for my go-ahead to shop for the fun stuff—it’s worth it in the long term to patiently heal well upfront.

Get a Professional Fitting

After you’ve completely healed, but before stocking up on new bras, have a professional measure your bust. Even if you selected your implants with a certain cup size in mind, your results may vary a bit. Because you’ll be working with an entirely new size range, it’s a great idea to have a professional help you find the size that will flatter your new figure most.

Don’t Splurge Right Away

Wait even a bit longer before buying really expensive bras. Even after you’ve healed, your breasts will continue changing as your implants settle and your swelling further subsides. Buying a nice bra or 2 is fine, but don’t go overboard until about 6 months have passed. At that point, you can generally count on your shape and size to stay the same, unless you decide to undergo revision surgery. Learn more about breast implant revision in my previous blog post.

Be Adventurous

Your new breasts don’t deserve the same old, same old. Try different styles and fashions you’ve been dreaming about wearing, and don’t be afraid to experiment with looks you would never have done for before. Enjoying the experience is a great way to celebrate your new shape and accentuate it in the best way possible.

Donate Your Old Bras

Though your old bras won’t work for you anymore, they can still go to great use. It’s no secret that bras can be expensive and are often overlooked when it comes to clothing donations. Consider giving your lightly used bras to a charity in your area that will pass them on to someone in need.
